The dreams not fully dreamt

This was a week where the world looked dull and grey and the glass was always half empty. I reverted to ashes - and the words from a song we often use for Ash Wednesday rolled through my head without ceasing for an entire afternoon: ...we offer you attempts the gifts...

Ashes?

It's well into Lent, and I'm being struck by ashes. Ashes are grey -- not navy blue, or muddy brown - Grey. Like colorless. Like I feel about so many things today. I've been down this rabbit hole before, and I'm not going back. So, I find that I must do whatever I can...

A Second Look

Today's Gospel (Mark 8,22-26) tells the story of Jesus healing a blind man. He takes him outside of the town, and it takes 2 passes before the man sees clearly. Then Jesus tells him to "Go home. Don't even go into the village." It seems that Jesus has had to touch my...

Baggage: Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals;

Today's Gospel (Luke 10,1-9) contains the instructions to the 72 sent out by Jesus: ...Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way... What strikes me is that the instruction is to leave your baggage behind. I carry too much baggage with me...

“I love you” – Mom

I found this in my drafts -- guess I forgot to hit publish... or maybe it was too close to my heart when I wrote it. A couple of years ago, my newly married daughter and her husband apparently had an interaction that overflowed to Mom. He comes from a family where he...

Scrutiny?

So, I open Today's Readings in gmail and notice that all of the ads are for Bridesmaid gifts and wedding books, etc. It's a hint - today's gospel contains the quote from Jesus "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the...

Forgiveness

A few days ago, Susan (Creo en Dios!) posted about forgiveness and made a reference to "The Shack." I just knew that this post was coming from "The Shack" - from the first sentence... ...God tries to get him to understand reconciliation.  God says, “There has never...

Mary, Mother of God

New Year's Day brings the feast of Mary, Mother of God -- and a world day of prayer for peace. They seem interlinked to me: to give birth to Christ is the greatest prayer for peace. It's a call -- to give birth to Christ every day in every circumstance -- that all...

Faith in the Giver

Fr. Jack got distracted by the readings, and wound up giving the homily I needed. He used the Hebrews reading which ends this way: By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son, of whom...

Christmas 3x

No day could possibly live up the expectations that so many of us put onto Christmas Day. We simply ask too much of a single day. Therefore, I have been blessed this year to celebrate at least 3 days of Christmas. Day One: Christmas Day -- mass, John and Daniel frying...
